Overview
An Introductory Epidemiology Learning Resource Data Description partnered with Dr. David Kleinbaum to produce an engaging and interactive product that teaches the fundamentals of epidemiology. Based on MediaDX, ActivEpi™ 2.0 combines video, animation, hyper-linked text, and interactivity, all synchronized with narration. The design of ActivEpi reflects modern research into how people learn. Click below to download a zipped archive containing lecture materials in the form of PowerPoint presentations developed by Dr. David Kleinbaum from the activities in each of the 15 Lessons contained in the CD and Companion Text. They are intended to provide an instructor with a convenient way to obtain or develop classroom presentations for a course that uses the ActivEpi CD as the primary textbook. ActivEpi 2.0 includes over 280 activities, with almost 500 minutes of high-quality, recorded audio, resulting in almost 65 hours of instruction. Users control the pace of instruction and decide when to skip a topic or slow down and work more carefully.
ActivEpi contains many activities that allow the student to apply what they have learned to real data using Data Desk, and specially designed epidemiology templates. Each activity in ActivEpi presents a single concept or method, taking full advantage of the multimedia abilities of computers. ActivEpi can be the text for a course, can supplement any standard text, or can be used individually by students who want study aids. It can be purchased from local bookstores or directly from Springer.
Key Features
The Lesson Book provides short introductions to activities, icons for launching activities, and access to other navigation tool, such as the index, glossary and table of contents.
Expositions are brief (2–3 minute) presentations of a single concept or method. You'll hear the voice of an experienced teacher, and you'll see text, pictures, animations, and sounds that explain the subject. Difficult or complex material can be repeated easily.
The tools are easy to learn and to use, and they are compatible with each other. Many tools are used to teach more than one concept.
Data Desk is available for both Macintosh and Windows computer systems.
Use drag-and-drop quizzes to evaluate your progress and to reinforce what you've learned. If you find a quiz difficult, we recommend that you review the activities that precede it in the Lesson Book. The quizzes won't be checked off in the Lesson Book until you have successfully filled in all the correct answers.
Each lesson of ActivEpi provides homework exercises. Homework exercises typically provide data and ask questions that employ the methods or concepts of that lesson. Many exercises include datasets and are linked with a mouse click to Data Desk or one of the Interactive Tools
