To ensure applications work as expected, you must test against business requirements before deployment. Because your testing effort will likely be a mix of manual and automated, it is important to accelerate and streamline both. At the same time, you should also modernize your practices to address new technologies and architectures like cloud, mobile and composite applications. For the best defect detection, test early in the lifecycle at the API layer, add Agile testing, validate through the GUI and repeat regression testing throughout the lifecycle.
